Energy for Sustainable Development
The Journal of the International
Energy Initiative

ISSN: 0973-0826
All material for publication in ESD must be
e-mailed to the Editor, Gautam S. Dutt, at gdutt@fibertel.com.ar.
The material must not have been sent for publication in
any other journal.
Readership
The
journal is directed towards all actors involved in the
planning, decision-making, financing, establishing, managing,
operating and using of energy systems of developing countries.
This means that though the preoccupation is with the energy
systems of developing countries, the readership is expected to
come both from the South and the North.
Scope
The
journal will view energy, not as an end in itself, but as an
instrument of sustainable development. It will be directed to
energy services, rather than the magnitude of energy
consumption, as the measure of development.
The
editorial board wishes particularly to encourage papers
(1) likely to be of interest to more than one professional
group.
(2) summarising,
at a sufficiently technical level, work done on special
projects of interest.
(3)
offering extensive critical reviews.
ESD considers the publication of highly specialized work more
appropriate to the many professional journals already being
published. The criteria for acceptance of papers in the
journal are therefore breadth of interest, irrespective of
whether the paper reports research or development, theory or
experiment, original work or review, and quality of work
reported and its presentation (text, diagrams, etc.). It is
important that authors write with clarity and simplicity to
cater for readers for many of whom English is just a second
language. The contributions will be selected for publication
on the basis of editorial assessment and a process of
anonymous peer review.
Categories of manuscript
News:
Brief
reports highlighting certain happenings in the areas of
concern of the journal, including descriptions of meetings/
short courses on energy or new products in the field of
energy.
Correspondence:
Critiques of articles/ reports in previous issues or some item
of interest to the envisaged readership of the journal.
Articles:
These
are reports of research or innovative projects that have
produced significant results/ benefits or exhaustive reviews
of research. They may also include exhaustive reviews of
products or technologies in a particular field. The length of
these should ordinarily fall in the range 2,500-10,000 words
with up to 15 display items such as photographs, drawings,
graphs and tables.
Short
articles:
Most
contributions under this category will carry a single message.
Specific energy projects, experiences with specific end-use
devices, new developments in existing designs, novel methods
of financing energy activities, and market studies for
different types of energy products are some examples that
would qualify for publication under this category. Normally
the length of these contributions will not exceed 2,000 words
of textual matter and six display items (figures and tables).
Discussions:
Papers that analyse the merits of alternative technologies,
energy policies, etc., may be designated as discussions rather
than as articles or short articles. Discussions could also
include analyses of recent news or developments in energy.
Their length is flexible.

Material for publication
All
material must be submitted in MS Word format. Figures may be
included in the Word document or sent as separate files in jpg
format. As ESD usually does not have colour pages, figures
other than photographs should preferably be in grey with
regions or lines differentiated by patterns rather than by
colours, so that they can be easily distinguished in print.
The text must be divided into sections, generally starting
with an introduction as the first section, and ending with
"Conclusions". The main sections should be numbered 1, 2,
etc., sub-sections 1.1, 1.2, etc. Articles and longer
discussions should be preceded by an abstract, preferably of
200-500 words.
Tables must be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals in
the order of occurrence in the text. They should be
self-contained and have a descriptive title.
Figures should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals in
the order of occurrence in the text. They should be
self-contained and have a descriptive title.
Appendices should be labelled with capital letters, Appendix
A, Appendix B, etc. Figures and tables in appendices should be
labelled, e.g., Figure A1 (first figure in Appendix A), Table
B3 (third figure in Appendix B), etc.
Units
and associated symbols must invariably follow SI practice.
References should be cited in the text by author and year, not
by number. If there are more than two authors, they should be
cited in the text by the first author followed by et al.
References at the end of the paper should be listed
alphabetically by authors' names, followed by initials, year
of publication, title of the article, name of the journal
(abbreviated according to standard practice), volume, number,
and numbers of first and last pages. References to books
should include: name(s) of author(s), initials, year of
publication, title of chapter (if any), title of the book,
edition if not the first, initials and name(s) of editor(s)
(if any) [preceded by ed(s)], place of publication, publisher,
and chapter or pages referred to. References to theses must
include the year, the title of thesis, the degree for which
submitted and the university.
Notes
should be numbered consecutively, and should appear at the end
of the article.
Proofs
Authors are requested to prepare the manuscript carefully
before submitting it for publication. ESD will edit the
manuscript before it reaches the printer. Page proofs in
Acrobat PDF format will be e-mailed to authors, who must
e-mail all corrections, listed and referred to by page, column
and line, within a week.
Reprints
50 reprints of each article will be supplied
free of charge.
